In the series finale of the HBO television series Six Feet Under, the character of Nate says something that rings so very true to real life. As his younger sister Claire is taking a picture of their family before she sets off to start a new journey in her life, Nate says to her, “You can’t take a picture of it. It’s already gone”. I watched this finale when it originally aired on TV, and it’s been a piece of television that has always stayed with me. Although, it wasn’t until years later when I watched those last few moments of the finale again where I realized how true what Nate says to Claire really is. Moments in time will always pass us by, even as we are living in those moments. Since time is something that never stops, that continues to move forward every single second, is it possible to truly appreciate any moment we are living if time is constantly moving forward? Any kind of story that involves the aspect of someone reliving the same day over and over again, is the kind of story that will continue to fascinate me. This concept of storytelling is best well known from the movie “Groundhog Day”, in which the main character of the story wakes up and continues to relive the same day over and over again. Fast forward to these last few months, where real life has become like one of those scripted time loop stories that I am so fond of. Where I am fond of stories that deal with the topic of time loops, I am much less fond of actually living in a time loop. I’ve always been a fan of existential tv dramas. I would say, though, that my appreciation for television series that dealt with that question of “Why?”, about life, didn’t come until a bit later in life for me. Growing up, for the most part, I was a fairly happy person on most days. I had friends, did okay in school, and participated in extracurricular activities. Then high school ended. In the years that followed, my friends stayed friends with one another and forgot about me, my stomach issues decided how my day would go, and that happy person I remembered being on most days seemed to disappear along with much of my self confidence. Okay, so before most TV programs come out these days there are usually always a trailer beforehand promoting these said TV programs. You know how you see a commercial or a trailer for a new show and think the following of TV Nerds thoughts, “UH YES! THIS LOOKS AMAZING! I WANT TO START WATCHING THIS LIKE YESTERDAY!”. Yeah, you know those TV Nerd thoughts. Well, maybe less dramatic than that but hey you get the drift of what I’m saying. You’re probably thinking that based on the thought like the one mentioned above that I would watch that program like right away. Is that ever the case with this gal? Never honestly, usually most of the time that be a nope! Usually if I’m really excited about a new show I actually wait a little bit of time to let my excitement lessen down a bit so I’m not overly excited and can watch the show seriously and not like, “AHHHH!!! Can’t Wait To Watch This!!!”. So my excitement and that initial hype that surrounds that new series has diminished up a bit so I can actually focus more than I might otherwise had been able focus if I started it right away. Series finales for television shows are super tricky to pull off sometimes. A show that has had several seasons under its belt, with its followers of fans, has a lot to live up to. Fans expect and hope for a good ending to a show that they have come to love after so many years, or at the very least are curious to see how it all ends.
