Has Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Really Sung Its Last Song?

Musical TV Show

Hey everyone!  When it comes to television these days, there tends to be more hype for series on streaming services and cable vs. network television.  While streaming services and cable are where most may go when deciding on a show to watch, there are amazing shows on network TV today.  And one of those amazing shows was Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC.  So, of course, NBC renewed the series for another season!  Oh, wait, what’s that?  Oh, yeah, they did the opposite of that, and instead decided to not give this extraordinary show another season.  And to this I say “WHAT THE……?!”

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has, for sure, become one of my favorite shows on TV.  This season, especially, I looked forward to this show every week to lift me up with its story and musical numbers.  If you’ve read my blog before, you know how much I love Broadway, and with not having seen any theater now in well over a year, I really came to appreciate this show even more this year.

Musical series on television, for the most part, seem to only appear here and there on TV every few years.  As in, this kind of series doesn’t have a constant presence on television every season such as medical or courtroom dramas have on TV.  That’s why a show like Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is such a TV gem.

After Crazy Ex- Girlfriend ended its run on the CW in 2019, I was sad, because, for one, it was a great show, and two, it was, at the time, the only musical television series on the air.  So, when Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist came on to the television scene, I was so happy because I am a Theater Nerd and I missed seeing people randomly breaking out into song every week on TV.  After tuning into the pilot episode of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, I quickly became a fan of this musical television series, thanks to its original and unique story.  A story that has an incredible amount of heart and sincerity.

I am not the only fan of this extraordinary series out there.  After it was announced that the show would not be getting a third season on NBC, or on the NBC streaming service Peacock, fans of the series got the show trending on Twitter with #SaveZoeysPlaylist.

Hopefully, some network, cable channel, or streaming service can see how much the fans of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist love and believe in this show, and will pick up the show for another season.  Because there’s so many more musical numbers that this incredible cast of this extraordinary show have to sing!  And the story!  There’s so much more story that this extraordinary show has to tell!  Especially after the Season 2 finale!  Like, WHAT?!  Amazing!  And also, WHAT?!  Another network needs to pick up this show because you can’t leave viewers like that!

I was very much caught by surprise that NBC did not pick up Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for a third season.  I really do hope that this show gets picked up somewhere else, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up in case that doesn’t happen.

These days, when a TV series doesn’t get renewed on its original channel, there’s always the possibility for that TV show to transfer somewhere else.  Well, here’s hoping this is one of those times where that happens.  I think this show would be perfect on ABC, the CW, or Hulu.

Whatever ends up happening with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, I just wanted to end this article by saying how much I enjoyed watching this show.  It’s a show that made me laugh, cry, think, and be entertained every week on TV with its amazing cast of talented performers.  It’s a show that warmed my heart and spirit each and every single week.  Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lives up to its name, for it is extraordinary!

*Seasons 1 and 2 are available to watch on Peacock, while the current (and last) season is currently up on Hulu*

As always, thanks so much for reading!
