I envy people who can concentrate long enough when at the beach or the pool to take time out to read a book. Heck, some people even have a reading list of books just for the summer to read at those places and actually stick to that reading list and read and finish those books at those places. Oh, to have such the concentration.
Not me. I wish I had that focus. But I don’t. When I do make it to the beach or to the pool I just go in the water and enjoy that feeling of being in a cool place on a warm summer day. I don’t have that focus or energy enough there to actually go and sit and read a book. In times such as these summer days, I really try as much as I can to go outdoors and appreciate this weather and just be in the moment of enjoying that outdoor moment, if that makes any sense.
This past winter was long and it had that ongoing feeling of never seeming to end, leave and go away. It seemed to keep going on and on and on and on and on. It even snowed in April here in NJ. I said, “Elsa, come on. This is enough. April is suppose to be for spring and sunshine and warm air, not snow”. This winter that seemed to stretch way past March. This winter with what seemed like no end it sight. This winter never seeming to go into the next season which was that of “spring”. This winter which felt like it went on for an eternity.
While I do enjoy reading at home, I find it to be the last thing on my mind when heading to the beach or the pool. With the weather finally being that weather where outdoor fun such as swimming is available, I just simply try and enjoy this time of the year outside. Reading a book is the last thing I would want to do when being outdoors in this beautiful outdoor weather. Although, I do admire those that do read there cause it can be a relaxing atmosphere to go and enjoy a book or two. For me though, when outdoors I try to appreciate being in the outdoors. You can always read a book anytime of the year in any atmosphere, but there may not always be those warm, nice summer outdoor days where you can look up at the sky and take in a breath of air, and simply just enjoy nothingness for a bit and let your mind rest and relax from daily life.
Being in the moment and truly letting everything from your mind take a pause and appreciating those days when it’s nice enough to go for a swim after a long, long, long winter is something truly special. Reading is awesome! Reading can take your mind away and let it go and enter a magical world other than your own for a brief period in time. Although, these nice days that the summer has to offer are special. Especially, after a long ongoing winter and should be appreciated with appreciation. So put down that book, look up at the sky and take a moment to say, “Thank you. I missed you”.
I think it’s important to be in the moment. 50/50 on reading at the beach for me. I’m super easily distracted myself although I do appreciate audio books just pop in the earphones and ignore the world -good way to avoid people as well. 🙂
